Let’s face it, drinking wine is usually lots of fun, but learning about tipsy Tuscany , not so much.
Fortunately for you, we at Florence Wine Tour are allergic to being boring so we want to make this blog as interesting and fun as possible!!!

To start things out, here are 20 interesting, lesser-known, and straight-up strange facts about wine:1. Watch Your Drinking buddies…The ritual of “Cheers” can be found dating back to Medieval times when poisoning was the tipsy tuscany preferred way to off of an enemy. To be certain their drink was poison-free, drinkers would first pour a bit of wine into each other’s glass so if there was poison in one, it was now in both. Cheers!
2. That’s a lot of grapes…

10,000 varieties of wine grapes exist worldwide.
3. Red is a lucky color…

The Chinese are the number one consumers of red wine in the world, drinking their way to a record 155 million 9-litre cases of red wine in 2013. The popularity of red wine in China has to do with the fact that red is considered to be a luck color and an important symbol in their culture. Per capita though the French are still the biggest Winos in the world even though Italy is the #1 producer of wine.
4. Turn down the lights…

Drinking wine can improve your sex life. A study in Italy found that women who consume 2 glasses of wine each day enjoy sex much more intensely than women who don’t imbibe at all. Cheers to that!
5. Have a little wine with that salad…

Contrary to popular belief, wine doesn’t make you fat. In fact, one study found that women who drank wine carried up to 10 pounds less than their non-drinking counterparts.
6. Are you afraid of the dark? Or…wine?

Believe it or not, there are people who don’t drink wine or are even afraid of it! Intense fear or hatred of wine is called “oenophobia.” We at Florence Wine Tour don’t usually discriminate but, if you don’t like wine, you can’t be our friend. Sorry not sorry!
7. Boxed wine > goatskin wine…
The English actually invented the dark green bottle concept. Sir Kenelm Digby invented it sometime in the 1600s. Before Digby’s handy invention wine was kept in goatskin bags.
8. If a tree falls in the woods…make a wine barrel out of it!

There are 400 different oak species available to source wood for making wine barrels.
9. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of a really good glass of wine…

The signing of the Declaration Of Independence was toasted with glasses of Madeira, a Portuguese wine tipsy tuscany.
10. Don’t be such a tease!

A “cork-tease” is someone who constantly talks about the wine he or she will open but never does. Don’t invite us over for dinner!
11. You say tomato, I say tomatoh…

On geographic locations, European wines are named. On the other hand, non- European wines named on varieties of grapes.
12. Never in the right place at the right time…

Because grapes in the Southern Hemisphere are picked during what is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, a 2010 Australian wine could be six months older than it claims.

A “butt” is a medieval measurement for wine’s liquid volume. Since we have grown to be adults. Yes, this makes us giggle like school girls.
19. Bathtub gin and…grape juice?

During prohibition, people were desperate for alcohol so grape juice concentrate manufacturers took advantage of this nationwide craving by putting a clever warning sticker on their product stating, “After you mix the concentrate with water, please do not keep the mix in a barrel for 20 days–as it will turn into wine.” Wink wink, nudge nudge.
20. I prefer my wine in a coffee mug…

Wine glasses have a gently curved rim at the top to keep the aromas contained in the glass. Usually the thinner the glass and the finer the rim, the better.
